The Empire Strikes Back

Please note: From now on I’m going to use the term “sith lord” to represent whenever one of our idiot leaders takes away from the poor to gives to the rich and becomes sort of an anti Robin Hood.

I was having trouble sleeping the other day so I turned on CSPAN to help. I watched some conference about healthcare led by a Republican committee and they were discussing how to fix the healthcare crisis. Emperor Bush anointed a sith lord subcommittee to investigate ways to manage healthcare and to create a plan to "help" Americans with their healthcare burdens. Translation: His big business friends are paying too much for healthcare, so he want to find a way to eliminate this cost and pass it onto the workers.

At the time, I was thinking, “Wow!! Kudos to President Bush for taking an active position and creating a subcommittee on this issue.” I soon changed my mind when I heard the nonsense, and at one point, I actually laughed out loud when they divulged the number one problem with healthcare in America. Would you like to guess before I tell you what it is?

Could it be the privatization of the hospitals in the mid 1980’s that drove up healthcare costs because the corporations that own these hospitals are earning billions from the sick instead of being non-profit?
NO!

Could it be 46 million Americans are uninsured because the US is the only civilized country on the planet without a national healthcare program?
NO!

Could it be because the insurance company profits are at an all time high? Maybe they are robbing the consumer like the thieving oil industry?
NO!

Could it be because Americans cannot afford healthcare and most of the time do not take the medication they need or seek the healthcare the need?
NO!

Could it be the enormous hospital bills the uninsured Americans receive if they do get life saving care are the number one cause of bankruptcy or losing their home?
NO!

According to this committee, the number one problem with healthcare is the consumer does not realize how much healthcare costs. So they are going to “educate” us by passing legislation to end healthcare “welfare” programs provided by governments and corporations. They suggest the consumer pay their own healthcare and are suggesting legislation to pass all healthcare costs directly to the consumer. Translation: if you get sick there is no medical help from the likes of Medicare or Medicaid. You’ve lost your healthcare benefits from your job so now you have to pay a $500,000 bill on a $20,000 a year salary. WOW! What a great idea!!

This is exactly what happens when you put several sith lord multi-millionaires in charge of a middle class problem. How do these Senators get so out of touch with the people they represent? They are only responding to corporate cries for healthcare reform and are not even considering the effects this issue has on the little guy. Now I understand how the French could storm the castle and behead everybody.

So now they are going to pass laws further ensuring no national healthcare, while increasing deductibles and limiting employer contributions. I have to find out the names of these sith lords so we can remember them in the next election. I hate to sound prejudice but they were all Republicans.

They kept using terms like “welfare” in substitution of national healthcare and corporate provided benefits. If is important to note that these subcommittee members get free healthcare provided by the federal government but they want everyday else to pay for it. It’s alright if they receive “welfare” but not anybody else. What a bunch of hypocritical jerks! But what can you expect from a bunch of sith lords.

It's sad that this country is as rich as it is and still does not have national healthcare. All to keep taxes down just to spend billions on a war in Iraq

Well said.

well, hey, darth, the important congresspersons -- er, sith lords -- do need to watch their health. I mean, surely their cushy pension plans are more valuable than Joe Schmoe's heart medication.

Hey Darth, Law Fairy,

We need to figure something out. I just heard that babies born with Medicaid are not looked at as quickly as those on regular insurance. WTH? I heard a presentation in church from a group called "Nurses for Newborns" that volunteers pediatric care and collects diapers and all sorts of stuff for under-insured or non-insured moms and babies. Let me retell some of it here:

Michael was born prematurely, and he was under 5 lbs. He had to be in an incubator. They sent him home with his mom after 3 days. The mom got home to find that the father of the baby left with the only car, never to return, because he "just wasn't ready to be a father."

The mother called WIC to get some food help, but they had to see that she actually had a baby to prove that she was not lying. That would have been a 5 mile walk. This 21 year old mother had no idea how to feed and care for an infant, to say nothing of one who was premature and needed extra care.

Nurses for Newborns was notified, and they showed up. The baby was undernourished and using all his caloric intake to try and stay warm, as he was just lying on a blanket in the middle of the floor. His temp was 96 degrees and he was shivering. They helped teach the mom how to care for the baby and properly swaddle him, got food and supplies and helped ensure that he would be OK.

We have an infant morality rate of 41Million/year, that's 47th in the world. So many babies are born and die because of stuff like this. It makes me want to scream. If you can, look up this group and donate something. At least we will put our money where our mouths are and work toward something that the government can't help with.

I still have a hard time advocating national health care, when you look at Brittain and Canada. I don't want to wait in line for a heart surgery, and I am glad my dad didn't have to.

Kit,

Nurses for Newborns is very active in helping many people like this. I will add a link to my page to help spread the word about this awesome organization.

As with any program, there are bound to be mistakes but I do not think we should scrap the entire program because of a few foul ups. This is the first I’ve heard about Medicaid patients getting put behind those with regular insurance but it does not surprise me. Remember Medicaid patients have a negotiated contract with healthcare facilities so maybe they are not getting needed help because of these fixed rates. The hospitals are now corporations with shareholders so giving healthcare to patients with a low rate does not fit into their profit plans. Again I am only speculating but I will look into this.

The need for national healthcare has never been greater. With 46 million people now uninsured healthcare is now a crisis. I am sure at first there would be a waiting list for certain surgeries because there are probably many people that currently cannot afford them; so there would be a flood of services for the initial year. After that I cannot imagine lines for live saving procedures but if there were I am sure the most critical would get treatment first.

As for the complainers that live in a country where they have healthcare; no matter how good people have it you will always have some that complain regardless. They might have to wait for their surgery but at least they get it and it does not ruin their economic future. I have trouble believing people are dying in the waiting lines if there is such a thing (but I will do some research on this).

You can bet that as healthcare costs rise more companies will be dropping coverage putting even families on the uninsured list. With national healthcare you would not have to choose between loosing your house to get healthcare or not getting treatment and death. This is a decision many Americans are forced to make today and it isn’t right.

We currently pay more for healthcare now than countries with national healthcare and we have 46 million uninsured. National healthcare would be a savings to most Americans not an increase in expenditures.

Thanks for your comments. Are you in the mood for Chinese next week?
